How can you help the Mizzou Botanic Garden grow?

The University of Missouri's landscape plays an important role in strengthening the academic environment, providing an educational resource and enhancing the image of the university. Gifts to the Mizzou Botanic Garden or its endowment fund provide a meaningful — and beautiful! — way for alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to make a vibrant and highly visible contribution.

There are a variety of gift opportunities you may want to consider. We would be delighted to discuss these and other possibilities.

Legacy Oaks of the Francis Quadrangle

The pin oaks lining the Francis Quad are declining. More recently, the pace has accelerated and limb dropping has increased in this heavily trafficked area. A plan is now in place to remove the majority of these trees, beginning with five particularly vulnerable specimens being and critical deadwood removal for the remaining trees, which will be removed soon. Rehabilitation work will begin on a few salvageable specimens. Replacement oaks are already growing, and will be transplanted to the quad after removals are complete. Many other mature trees will of course remain around Francis Quad, but for most of the pin oaks lining the lawn, the time has come.

Consider a legacy gift: If you are already a donor, or are considering donation, give some thought to the legacy that would be left by planting brand new rows of majestic trees lining the historic and beautiful Francis Quad, trees that will last for decades, providing beauty and shade for countless future visitors, faculty, staff, and students.

Plans being discussed may include commemorative plaques for tree “sponsors,” similar to the Carnahan Quad on the south side of Jesse Hall. Those trees (swamp white oak, Quercus bicolor ) are just beginning to come into their own now, about 15 years after planting, and have many decades still to come.

Tribute Trees

Tribute Trees Online Map

A tree is a living legacy, an investment that appreciates in size and beauty. A gift of a tree is a profoundly thoughtful and enduring way of honoring or commemorating a graduate, alum, parent, retiring member of the university's faculty or staff, an organization or special event. A 5"x8" bronze plaque alongside the tree gratefully acknowledges your gift and the honoree. Your gift also provides for the tree's continued care and enriches Mizzou's botanical education resources. Many different species are needed for different locations on campus. Our landscape architects will gladly assist you in your selection.

Tribute Benches

Another popular gift option is an attractive, comfortable cast-iron bench — an amenity much appreciated by students, visitors and the entire university community. A 2" x 10" bronze plaque commemorating your gift is a functional way to have your generosity acknowledged and enjoyed for years.

Tribute Gardens

A beautiful way to make an educational gift to the university is to establish a garden in a prominent location, containing labeled collections of perennial flowers, ornamental grasses and trees. A 7"x12" bronze plaque commemorates your gift in a lasting manner; an endowment fund for maintenance will assure its continued beauty.
