Dr. Robert H. Reigschneider Tribute Bench:
A Legacy Rooted in Education and Service

Dr. Robert H. ReifschneiderIn front of Hill Hall, nestled among the trees and footpaths of the University of Missouri campus, sits a quiet tribute to a man whose
life was dedicated to education, leadership, and service—
Dr. Robert H. Reifschneider. The memorial bench, placed in his
honor, serves not only as a place of rest but as a symbol of the enduring impact he had on generations of students and colleagues.

Dr. Reifschneider served as Director of Educational Placement in
MU’s College of Education from 1965 to 1992. During his tenure,
he helped launch the careers of thousands of educators across Missouri and the nation. Known for his personal touch, Bob met individually with students, guided them through the job search process, and maintained a legendary 3x5 card file that connected candidates with opportunities. His office in Hill Hall was
more than a workspace—it was a place of mentorship, encouragement, and hope.

Colleagues described him as “an icon in educational placement,” admired by both students and school administrators. His influence was so profound that even decades later, faculty continued to advise students, “Be sure to get acquainted with Bob Reifschneider. He’s someone you need to know.”

Bob’s legacy extended beyond his professional role. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a man of deep faith and quiet generosity. He was a founding member of the “Rusty Zippers,” a group of retired College of Education faculty who met weekly for coffee and camaraderie. His humor, warmth, and stories—especially those about his travels and Skype calls with his granddaughter Grace—made him a cherished presence.

The Tribute Bench at the foot of the Hill Hall stairs offers a place to pause and reflect, much like Bob himself did for so many. It stands near the Educational Placement Office he led for nearly three decades, a fitting location for a man whose life’s work was helping others find their path.

As his daughter Laura shared, “He was a life-long teacher far beyond the classroom, an inspiration and true friend to many. He launched and shepherded hundreds of careers, always giving freely of his time and energy to support each and every teacher, principal and superintendent in times of doubt, need or opportunity.”

Dr. Reifschneider’s bench is more than a memorial—it is a reminder of the quiet power of service, the strength of community, and the lasting impact of a life well-lived.
