Kentucky Coffeetree – Gymnocladus dioicus
This large tree has huge compound leaves with small leaflets that, during the summer, give the tree a
lacy appearance. In winter, without its leaves, the tree’s thick twigs produce a coarse silhouette.
Its seeds are sometimes used as a coffee substitute; it is believed roasting them neutralizes toxins
they contain.
